Phone cameras open QR codes immediately, which is convenient right up until the code is a sticker someone slapped over the real one on a parking meter. Reading the code without following it is the safer order.

Frequently asked questions
Why check a QR code before opening it?
Because a code is unreadable to humans, it’s an easy place to hide a bad address — fake parking meters and restaurant menus are a real and common scam. Seeing the domain first is the whole defence.
It can’t find the code in my picture.
Crop closer to the code, make sure it isn’t blurred, and avoid heavy glare. Very low-contrast or partially covered codes can be unreadable.
Does the camera feed go anywhere?
No. Frames are analysed in your browser and never sent; the camera stops as soon as a code is found or you close the page.
Can it read barcodes too?
This page is for QR codes specifically. Ordinary product barcodes need a different decoder.
