Add VAT to a price, or find the price before VAT from the total.

Two questions, one calculator. Adding VAT is easy arithmetic. Removing it is the one people get wrong: you divide by 1.20, you don’t subtract 20%, and the difference on a €1,000 invoice is €33.

Type the amount, pick the rate (or choose a country’s standard rate from the list), and both the net and gross figures appear with the tax separated out — the three numbers an invoice line needs.

Rates change and reduced rates apply to all sorts of things, so the list is a shortcut, not tax advice.

How to use it

  1. Type the amount you have.
  2. Set the rate, or pick a country’s standard rate.
  3. Choose whether you’re adding VAT or taking it out.
  4. Read the net, the VAT and the gross.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a total?

Divide by 1 + the rate. At 20%, a €120 total is €120 ÷ 1.20 = €100 before VAT, and €20 of VAT. Subtracting 20% would wrongly give €96.

Which rate applies to me?

The standard rate of the country where the sale is taxed, unless your goods or services fall under a reduced rate. The list covers standard rates only; check your tax authority for the rest.

Does it handle rounding the way an invoice should?

Figures are shown to two decimals. Invoicing rules differ on whether VAT is rounded per line or per invoice, so for accounting use your invoicing software’s own totals.

Are my numbers sent anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser as you type.
