Add page numbers to a PDF

Number the pages of a PDF, with a cover page skipped if you need it.

Contracts, dissertations, reports assembled from several files: anything printed and handed to someone needs numbered pages, and scanned or merged documents rarely have them.

The numbers are drawn into the existing document rather than rebuilt from it, so the text stays selectable and the bookmarks, links and form fields survive untouched.

Start at any number — useful when a document continues from another one — and skip the first page when it’s a cover.

How to use it

  1. Drop in your PDF.
  2. Pick the style (“1”, “1 / 12”, “Page 1”, “Page 1 of 12”) and where it goes.
  3. Set the size, the margin, and whether to skip the cover.
  4. Save the numbered PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start numbering at something other than 1?

Yes. Set the starting number, and combine it with skipping the first page when a cover shouldn’t count.

Will it cover my text?

The number sits in the margin. If your document has an unusually small margin, reduce the distance from the edge or move the number to the other side.

Does it work on a scanned PDF?

Yes. A scan is a picture per page; the number is drawn on top of it as real text.

Are my bookmarks and links kept?

Yes. The file is edited in place, so everything already inside it stays as it was.
