Your browser already knows how to decode the video. The MP3 encoder is the one piece it lacks, so it’s downloaded on demand the first time you pick MP3 — after that everything happens on your device.
You can also cut a section before exporting, which saves waiting for an hour-long file when you want four minutes of it.

Frequently asked questions
Why MP3 rather than M4A?
MP3 plays on absolutely everything. M4A (AAC) sounds slightly better at the same size and is what your browser can produce natively, so it’s faster. Both are offered.
Does converting lose quality?
The audio is decoded and re-encoded, so yes, slightly — it can’t be better than the sound already in the video. At the high quality used here, the difference is hard to hear.
Is there a size limit?
Only your device’s memory and patience. Long videos take a while because everything is processed locally, and where the browser allows it the result is written to disk rather than held in memory.
Can I download the audio from YouTube?
No. This works on video files you already have; it doesn’t fetch anything from streaming sites.
