Test your speakers and headphones

Left, right and both — plus a frequency sweep for your speakers or headphones.

Play a tone in one ear at a time to check your speakers or headphones are both working and on the right side.

Start quietly, especially with headphones. Most adults stop hearing anything above 15–17 kHz, so silence at the end of the sweep is normal.

Two things go wrong with audio and sound identical in a call: one side isn’t playing, or the sides are swapped. Both take ten seconds to check with a tone that plays in one ear at a time.

The tones are generated live in your browser, so there is no file to download and no advertising jingle at the end.

The sweep runs from 20 Hz to 20 kHz over twenty seconds. Small speakers give up on the bass long before the end, and most adults stop hearing the top — both are normal.

How to use it

  1. Put your headphones on (or unmute your speakers).
  2. Play the left tone, then the right, then both.
  3. Adjust the tone and volume, or run the full sweep.

Frequently asked questions

One side is silent.

Try another pair of headphones or another socket to find out whether it’s the device or the headphones. On wireless earbuds, re-pairing fixes a surprising number of one-sided failures.

Left and right are swapped.

Check the labels on the earpieces first, then your system’s balance setting, then the cable or adapter if there is one.

I can’t hear the end of the sweep.

Normal. Hearing above 15–17 kHz fades with age, and many speakers don’t reproduce it anyway.

Is it safe for my ears?

Start at a low volume, especially with headphones — pure tones sound quieter than music at the same level and it’s easy to turn them up too far.
