PNG files are compressed by smartly reducing colours (up to 256), like TinyPNG. Transparency is kept.
PNG is lossless, so it can’t be compressed the way a JPG is. What shrinks a PNG dramatically is reducing the number of distinct colours — most screenshots, logos and illustrations use far fewer than the millions a PNG can store.
The encoder here picks the best palette of up to 256 colours for each image and dithers where needed so gradients stay smooth. Transparency, including soft edges, is kept.
For photos saved as PNG, converting to JPG or WebP will always save far more; palette compression shines on flat graphics.

Frequently asked questions
Is this lossy?
Slightly: colours are merged into a palette. On screenshots, icons and illustrations the difference is usually invisible; on photographs with smooth gradients you may see banding at low settings.
Is transparency kept?
Yes, including partial transparency, so anti-aliased logo edges stay clean on any background.
How is this different from TinyPNG?
Same idea — colour quantisation — except it runs on your device: nothing is uploaded, and there’s no file size cap or quota beyond what your device can handle.
