Convert PNG to SVG
Trace a PNG into a scalable SVG, with its transparent background preserved.
Works best on flat artwork — logos, icons, line drawings, screenshots. Photographs can be traced too, but every shade becomes another shape, so expect a large file and a poster-like result rather than a faithful copy.
PNGs are usually the flat kind of image tracing is good at — exported icons, UI screenshots, diagrams, sprites, artwork with a transparent background — so this page starts with a small palette and sharp edges rather than the general-purpose settings.
Transparency is carried through. A logo on a transparent PNG comes out as an SVG with nothing behind it, which is the whole point of converting it in the first place.
“Keep square corners sharp” is on here. It snaps near-90° corners to true right angles, which is right for interface elements and boxes, and wrong for anything hand-drawn — turn it off for organic shapes.
How to use it
- Drop in your PNG.
- Lower the colour count until the shapes look clean.
- Turn off square corners if the artwork is organic rather than geometric.
- Download the SVG.
Frequently asked questions
Does the transparent background survive?
Yes. Transparent pixels produce no paths, so the SVG has a genuinely empty background rather than a white rectangle.
My PNG is a screenshot of text. Will the text be editable?
No. The letters become outlines that look right but are not text any more — you cannot retype them, and no font is involved. To get editable text out of a picture, use image to text (OCR) instead.
Why do I get a fuzzy halo around the shapes?
Anti-aliased edges are semi-transparent pixels, and the tracer reads them as their own thin colour band. Raise “Remove specks” and lower the colour count and the halo usually disappears.
Should I use this to make a favicon?
You can trace a logo here first, but the favicon generator takes a PNG directly and produces every size plus the manifest, which is usually the shorter route.
Is it lossless?
No. Tracing is an approximation by nature — the output is a drawing of your image, not the image itself. It is infinitely scalable, which a PNG is not, and that is the trade.
