Every box that matters has a different limit: 280 characters on X, 160 for a meta description, 60 for a page title that won’t be cut off in search results, 160 for one SMS.
Type or paste, and each limit shows how much room is left. Emoji count as one character, the way the platforms count them, not as the two or four they take up in storage.
SMS gets its own count, because it’s the one people get wrong: a single accented character or emoji switches the message to Unicode and cuts the per-message allowance from 160 to 70.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my SMS suddenly cost two messages?
Because one character forced it into Unicode mode — often a curly apostrophe, an accent or an emoji — which reduces each part from 160 to 70 characters.
How are emoji counted?
As one character each, which matches how X and most platforms count. Some systems count the underlying bytes, so a text full of emoji may be measured differently elsewhere.
What’s the right length for a page title?
Around 60 characters: beyond that Google usually truncates it in the result. Meta descriptions get around 160.
