16:9 is the widescreen shape of slides, YouTube videos, TVs and almost every laptop screen. A phone photo (4:3 or 3:4) has to lose a strip to fit.

Frequently asked questions

How much of a normal photo does 16:9 cut?

About a quarter of the height of a landscape 4:3 photo. A portrait photo loses far more, so a vertical photo is rarely a good 16:9 image.

What pixel size is 16:9?

1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080 and 3840 × 2160 are the common ones. Crop first, then resize to one of them if needed.

Is this the right shape for YouTube thumbnails?

Yes. For an exact 1280 × 720 file, the YouTube thumbnail preset crops and resizes in one go.
