How this works

  • Nothing is uploaded — the file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser, so there is no queue, no size limit beyond your device’s memory, and your recording never reaches anyone else.
  • MP3 is the interesting one — no browser ships an MP3 encoder, only a decoder, which is why most free converters are servers. This loads a small encoder into the page on demand instead.
  • Cutting is exact — set the start and end by ear with the player, then use the playhead button to snap a marker to where you are. What you keep is what you hear between them.
  • Video files work too — drop an MP4 or a MOV and the audio track comes out on its own. The picture is discarded.

M4A is what an iPhone voice memo, an Apple Music download and most modern recorders produce. It is a better format than MP3 — more quality per byte — right up to the moment something refuses to open it, which is usually an older car stereo, a gym machine, a DJ controller or a website that only accepts MP3.

This converts the audio without uploading it. The encoding happens in your browser using a small MP3 encoder loaded into the page, which is the step that normally forces these tools onto a server.

Voice memos in particular are often private, so it matters that this one stays on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Will the MP3 sound worse than the M4A?

Slightly, in principle: it is a second lossy encoding of already-lossy audio. At High quality the difference is inaudible for speech and very hard to hear for music. Convert only when you need to.

Does this work on iPhone voice memos?

Yes — a voice memo is an M4A file. Share it to your device, drop it in, and you get an MP3 back.

What about DRM-protected purchases?

Those cannot be converted by this or anything else in a browser, and the file simply will not open. Older iTunes purchases with protection are the usual case.

Is the file uploaded?

No. It is decoded and re-encoded entirely in your browser.
