How this works

  • Nothing is uploaded — the file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser, so there is no queue, no size limit beyond your device’s memory, and your recording never reaches anyone else.
  • MP3 is the interesting one — no browser ships an MP3 encoder, only a decoder, which is why most free converters are servers. This loads a small encoder into the page on demand instead.
  • Cutting is exact — set the start and end by ear with the player, then use the playhead button to snap a marker to where you are. What you keep is what you hear between them.
  • Video files work too — drop an MP4 or a MOV and the audio track comes out on its own. The picture is discarded.

A WAV is roughly ten megabytes a minute, which makes it awkward to email, upload or put on a phone. An MP3 of the same recording is about a tenth of that and sounds the same to almost everyone.

This is the conversion where in-browser encoding is most worth having: WAV files are big, and uploading a 400 MB recording to a converter just to get a 40 MB file back is slow and needlessly public. Nothing is uploaded here.

High quality is the default and is the right answer unless you are specifically chasing a small file.

Frequently asked questions

How much quality do I lose?

At High quality, very little, and nothing most listeners can hear. The loss is real and permanent, so keep the WAV if it is a master rather than a copy.

How small will the file be?

Roughly a tenth of the WAV at High quality, and less again at the lower settings. The exact size depends on the recording.

Can my browser really make an MP3?

Not on its own — no browser ships an MP3 encoder. A small one is loaded into the page when you choose MP3, which is what lets this work without a server.

Does it handle long recordings?

Yes. The only limit is your device's memory, and encoding runs at a pace the encoder sets rather than buffering the whole file at once.
