Why do websites use WebP?

What happens to transparency?
JPG can’t store it, so transparent areas get a solid background (white by default, adjustable). Use WebP to PNG to keep transparency.
Does it work for animated WebP?
Only the first frame is converted, since JPG can’t animate.
